So you’ve tried the Atkin’s diet, the south beach diet, the vegan diet, and the keto diet. Maybe next you’ll give the paleo diet a try, and if that fails, the zone diet. And, if you still haven’t lost weight by the end of all this, maybe you’ll just starve yourself until you reach your goal.
Some people want to lose weight desperately. When they’re busy juggling a hectic work life and an active personal life, that they’ll try anything. We’re here to tell you that, just like fad diets, starvation is not only extremely unhealthy and dangerous, it’s also not going to help with weight loss in the long run. You’ll do more damage to your body than good. So, if you want to slim down safely, as quick as possible, and keep it off, you should know why starvation isn’t the answer.
There’s a range of research behind why starvation isn’t an effective weight loss method. To sum it up, starvation can lead to malnutrition, a state where your body is lacking in one or more nutrients. It might be all the rage with your peers but that doesn’t mean it’s the right option.
While you might lose weight, you’re also putting yourself at risk of developing severe health problems. These include kidney failure, heart failure, IBS, and other permanent organ damage. You’ll also likely feel very tired, and hungry, all the time which is not what you want when you’re at the office.
If that doesn’t convince you that starvation isn’t great for your body, it might help to know that people who use fasting as a weight loss tactic find it harder to lose the pounds. When your body recognises that it’s starving it goes into conservation mode, trying to use as little energy as it can. This means slowing your metabolism right down and burning as few calories as possible. This is the exact opposite of what you want when trying to lose weight.
Starvation isn’t the answer to weight loss, but neither are fad diets. Fad diets don’t help you keep it off. We end up putting what we lost right back on. Why is this?
The diet industry has become a multi-billion dollar industry that will do anything to get you to buy into it. At the same time, we’re also bombarded by another multi-billion dollar industry – the fast food industry. They want you to eat as much as possible.
It’s a tug of war between the two sides. It’s why, after we starve ourselves in one fad diet, many of us can’t help but go straight back to the fast food. That ‘secret’ to weight loss, the one we hear so much about, never gets revealed – or so we think.
The truth is, there is no secret to weight loss. What we know as the most effective way to lose weight has been around since the dawn of time. All you have to do is eat fewer calories than you burn in a day. It’s just maths. But, this doesn’t mean you need to starve. It means, instead of filling your plate with pizza, you fill it with multi-coloured vegetables and have a few carbs on the side. Instead of red meat every day, you cut down and occasionally swap for fish. It means eating whole grains.
If you eat a balanced, varied, and healthy diet, you’re guaranteed to start making progress and curb your cravings at the same time. But, most importantly, eating this way shouldn’t mean you’re on a diet. It should just be the way you eat.
